This special edition of NHC’s quarterly update to our Paycheck to Paycheck database explores housing challenges for workers of 15 infrastructure-related occupations. We show that homeownership is out of reach in a majority of metropolitan areas for workers of all but one of these occupations, and that even renting a place to live is challenging for them across much of the country. However, we also find that access to homeownership could be significantly expanded with the creation of a federal down payment assistance program that provides up to $20,000 in down payment assistance to first-generation homebuyers, showing that housing affordability can be improved through federal policy.
