Statement from NHC President & CEO Chris Estes on President Trump’s Feb. 28 Address to Congress

WASHINGTON—In his address to Congress, President Trump expressed his interest in improving the economic situation of American families. While not addressed in the speech, affordable homeownership and rental opportunities have a role in bringing stability, health and opportunity to American families and communities. For most families in America, housing is the single biggest household expense.  Stable housing is also what makes so much else possible: success in school, good health, business startups, and good jobs. As many leaders in both parties have recognized over the years, the federal government has a major role to play in helping all in America find equal opportunity to live in a quality, affordable home in a thriving community.  The National Housing Conference hopes this administration and Congress will renew their attention to America’s housing challenges.

About NHC: Everyone in America should have equal opportunity to live in a quality, affordable home in a thriving community. The National Housing Conference educates decision makers and the public about housing policies and practices to move housing forward together. NHC convenes and collaborates with our diverse membership and the broader housing and community development sectors to advance our policy, research and communications initiatives to effect positive change at the federal, state and local levels. Founded in 1931, we are a nonpartisan, 501(c)3 nonprofit organization. NHC’s research team operated as the Center for Housing Policy until the organizations merged in 2013.
