Sustainable by Design: Making Homeownership Happen

As communities across the nation continue to grapple with rising home prices and high interest rates, many families believe that affordable homeownership is more difficult to achieve than ever before. This webinar will discuss successful programs, products, and approaches to affordable and sustainable homeownership that also elevates the financial capabilities of mortgage borrowers so that they can make their best housing choice.

Deletta Dean – Passionate about improving the livability of disinvested communities, Deletta Dean chose a career in community development because she wanted to improve her neighborhood and others like it. She has more than 25 years of experience in community development, affordable housing and neighborhood preservation. Her work in these spaces has been purposeful and has given her a deep understanding of the challenges many communities faces, particularly marginalized communities. Prior to joining NeighborWorks America, Dean worked for 15 years at the City of Kansas City, Missouri, including 13 years as deputy director of the Neighborhoods and Housing Services Department. She also has a deep commitment to advancing equity and inclusion and served as executive sponsor of the City of Kansas City’s first employee resource group that focused on developing emerging African American leaders in city government. Her background also includes serving as a program officer with Greater Kansas City LISC, various leadership roles with the Housing Authority of Kansas City, Missouri, a regional property manager for Cohen Esrey Real Estate Services, and a housing administrator with SAVE Inc., where she assisted with the development and management of Kansas City’s first affordable housing program for persons living with HIV/AIDS. Dean holds a bachelor’s degree in Public Affairs and a Master of Public Affairs with a concentration in nonprofit management from Park University. She also earned the Certified Public Manager designation from the University of Kansas. She serves on boards for several community-based organizations, mentors youth and volunteers throughout Kansas City. |
Tucker Bartlett – Tucker serves as the Executive Vice President for Self-Help Credit Union where he works in commercial lending, real estate development and finance, mortgage servicing, and secondary markets. |
Elena Gonzales – Elena Gonzales serves as the Chief Operating Officer at Homewise, Inc., a non-profit Community Development Financial Institution (CDFI) in New Mexico with a mission to help create successful homeowners and strengthen neighborhoods so that individuals and families can improve their long-term financial well-being and quality of life. She has over 33 years of experience in various arenas of affordable housing and in her current role, Elena leads the home purchase operations from homebuyer coaching to real estate sales, lending and loan servicing. Elena currently serves on the Board of Directors for the Opportunity Finance Network (OFN), the Public Policy Committee for NALCAB (National Association for Latino Community Asset Builders) and City and State Affordable Housing Committees. Prior to joining Homewise in 2014, Elena was the Executive Director for 15 years at HOME-New Mexico, a non-profit focused on creating homeownership opportunities for people with disabilities. She is a native New Mexican with a Bachelor’s Degree in Business Administration from the University of New Mexico. |

Meaghan McCarthy – Meaghan McCarthy joined the Housing Partnership Network in May 2019. As the Vice President of Affordable Housing and Consumer Empowerment, Ms. McCarthy oversees HPN’s homeownership and consumer empowerment work, including housing counseling, homeownership development and finance, resident services, and economic empowerment. She also oversees HPN’s Green and Healthy Communities Initiative work.Ms. McCarthy comes to HPN from MassHousing, where worked in Rental Business Development, originating loans and on the design and implementation of a subordinate debt program. Before joining MassHousing, Ms. McCarthy was a budget and policy analyst on the Senate Appropriations Committee overseeing a variety of federal housing and community development programs. Ms. McCarthy started her career at the Children Defense Fund.
Ms. McCarthy holds a BA from Notre Dame where she majored in government and an MBA from Johns Hopkins with an emphasis in real estate. She also serves on the board of Compass Working Capital.
