SUMMARY:Solutions for Housing Communications
DESCRIPTION:On April 3\, 2024\, the National Housing Conference hosted its Solutions for Housing Communications convening at the National Press Club in Washington\, D.C. This hybrid convening is the only national convening for housing communications leaders. Housing experts\, thought leaders\, policymakers\, and journalists from across the United States convened for a full day of sessions exploring communications and messaging strategies for successfully expanding awareness about the importance of affordable housing both at the national level and within local communities.  \n  \n\n\n\n\nOpening Session featuring John Sullivan\, Investigative Reporter\, The Washington Post \nPulitzer Prize winner John Sullivan opened the convening with a presentation on the influence of data on shaping news narratives. He provided multiple case studies on how he used data to curate stories on police brutality\, how the housing crisis impacted Black wealth in America\, and the 2020 Election.\n\n\n\n\n\nUnlocking Housing Solutions: The Power of Nonprofit-Corporate Partnerships\nIn this panel\, panelists delved into the dynamics\, strategies\, and real-world impacts of nonprofit-corporate partnerships\, shedding light on how such alliances can drive positive change in the housing sector. Attendees discovered how nonprofits and corporations can come together with a shared commitment to housing solutions\, pooling their resources\, expertise\, and networks to create innovative and sustainable initiatives. Our panelists shared their experiences\, challenges\, and success stories\, offering insights into how these partnerships can be structured for maximum effectiveness.\n\n\n\n\n\nThe Power of Words: Shaping the Narrative on Housing\nFrom the detrimental effects of stigmatizing terms to the uplifting potential of inclusive and empathetic language\, this panel sought to illuminate the critical role that words play in influencing public sentiment and policy decisions on housing issues. Through real-world examples and case studies\, panelists unraveled the impact of language choices on public opinion\, political discourse\, and the implementation of housing-related strategies. Attendees gained insights into the responsibility communicators bear in crafting messages that foster understanding\, compassion\, and support for equitable housing solutions.\n\n\n\n\n\nKeynote Address by The Honorable Adrianne Todman\, Acting Secretary\, U.S Department of Housing and Urban Development \nActing Secretary Adrianne Todman delivered a keynote address in which she discussed the latest actions the Administration is taking to address the shortage of affordable housing in America. During a Q&A with NHC President and CEO David Dworkin\, Todman announced HUD’s plans to publish a proposed HOME Investment Partnership Program regulation for comment in the Spring. The proposal intends to modernize the program and make it more user-friendly. “It’s the program you love to hate\,” said Todman. “It’s critical to get to the income brackets of the people who we know need housing the most in this country\, but we know sometimes it doesn’t marry well with other parts of the capital stack.”\n\n\n\n\n\nUsing Data to Tell the Housing Story\nIn this dynamic panel discussion\, experts at the intersection of data analytics and housing convened to illuminate the untold stories embedded in the numbers\, unveiling the intricate tapestry of the housing landscape. As we navigate the complex realm of housing\, this panel showcased the transformative power of data in unraveling narratives that shape our communities. From housing trends and market dynamics to socio-economic impacts\, our panelists demonstrated how data serves as a powerful lens through which we can gain deeper insights into the challenges and opportunities within the housing sector.\n\n\n\n\n\nAddressing Senior Homelessness Through Effective Communications\nAs our population ages\, the prevalence of seniors experiencing homelessness or housing instability is on the rise\, making it imperative for policymakers and communities to unite to address this growing concern. Economic upheavals\, such as escalating housing expenses or unforeseen life circumstances\, can swiftly thrust seniors relying on fixed incomes into homelessness. Experts came together as they shared their experiences\, research findings\, and success stories in effectively addressing senior homelessness\, highlighting the pivotal role of communication in raising awareness\, garnering support\, and instigating positive change.\n\n\n\n\n\nNavigating NIMBYism: Crafting Effective Messaging Strategies for Affordable Housing Development\nAs the demand for affordable housing continues to rise\, communities often resist new developments\, citing concerns ranging from property values to neighborhood aesthetics.
