SUMMARY:Fannie Mae\, Freddie Mac and the future of American homeownership
DESCRIPTION:The Federal Housing Finance Agency (FHFA) announced on Tuesday that Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac will submit plans by the end of this year to reduce racial disparities in housing finance. FHFA’s announcement makes it clear that these plans must include serious measures to provide for equity in housing finance\, potentially changing the focus and scope of housing finance policy for a generation.\n\nOn Thursday\, September 30\, from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. ET\, NHC and the Homeownership Alliance will co-host a forward-looking online convening to discuss the Enterprises’ role in affordable homeownership\, the implications of FHFA’s announcement\, near-term reforms in housing finance\, and how we can collectively close the racial homeownership gap. The convening will open with a 45-minute conversation between FHFA Acting Director Sandra Thompson and NHC President and CEO David Dworkin. This will be followed by presentations and panel discussions from industry and government experts on closing disparities in homeownership\, particularly in communities of color\, and maintaining a sustainable mortgage market.\n\nAgenda\n\n11 to 11:10 a.m. – Introductory remarks by David Dworkin\, NHC; and Kris Siglin\, Homeownership Alliance.\n11:10 a.m. to noon – NHC President David Dworkin and FHFA Acting Director Sandra Thompson discuss the role of the Enterprises in affordable homeownership\nNoon to 1 p.m. – Presentations on the racial homeownership gap from Steve O’Connor\, Mortgage Bankers Association; Lindsey Johnson\, U.S. Mortgage Insurers; Cindy Waldron\, Freddie Mac; and Katrina Jones\, Fannie Mae; facilitated by Cy Richardson\, National Urban League.\n1 to 2 p.m. – Panel discussion on what is needed to move the numbers forward\, featuring Kristy Fercho\, Wells Fargo; Cerita Battles\, JPMorgan Chase; Chrissi Johnson\, Rocket Mortgage; Mike Loftin\, HomeWise; and Loretta Williamson\, Truist Bank.\n2 to 3 p.m. – Panel discussion on the Enterprises’ role in securing sustainable mortgages\, featuring Anne McCulloch\, Housing Partnership Equity Trust; HUD Deputy Assistant Secretary Lopa Kolluri; Mark McArdle\, Consumer Financial Protection Bureau; and Ted Wartell\, FHFA.\n\nResources\nPresentation by Cindy Waldron (Freddie Mac) \nPresentation by Katrina Jones (Fannie Mae) \nPresentation by Steve O’Connor (Mortgage Bankers Association) \nPresentation by Lindsey Johnson (U.S. Mortgage Insurers) \nMortgage Bankers Association report on NextGen Homebuyers \nFreddie Mac report on Racial and Ethnic Valuation Gaps in Home Purchase Appraisals \nConvening recordings
