SUMMARY:Annual Member Meeting 2020
DESCRIPTION:On June 18\, NHC held its Annual Member Meeting. We were pleased to have House Majority Whip Jim Clyburn (D-S.C.) join us for our Annual Member Meeting. Rep. Clyburn is the first African American Majority Whip in Congress. Rep. Clyburn discussed ways housing advocates can be a part of solutions to achieve racial justice and economic equity. \nThe meeting also featured a presentation by NHC President and CEO David M. Dworkin on NHC’s FY2019 financial information and our 2020 policy initiatives\, as well as a special presentation by leading economists Lawrence Yun\, chief economist and senior vice president at the National Association of REALTORS®; Robert Dietz\, Ph.D.\, chief economist and senior vice president for economics and housing policy at the National Association of Home Builders; and Mike Fratantoni\, senior vice president and chief economist at the Mortgage Bankers Association\, on the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on the housing market. \n  \nSpeakers\n\n\n\n\n \nJames E. Clyburn is the Majority Whip\, the third-ranking Democrat in the United States House of Representatives\, and currently serves as the Chairman of the House Select Committee on the Coronavirus Crisis.  He is also the Chairman of the Rural Broadband Task Force and Democratic Faith Working Group. \nWhen he came to Congress in 1993 to represent South Carolina’s sixth congressional district\, Congressman Clyburn was elected co-president of his freshman class and quickly rose through leadership ranks. He was subsequently elected Chairman of the Congressional Black Caucus\, Vice Chairman\, and later Chairman\, of the House Democratic Caucus. He previously served as Majority Whip from 2007 to 2011 and served as Assistant Democratic Leader from 2011 to 2019.\n\n\n\n \nDavid M. Dworkin joined NHC as president and CEO in January 2018. Prior to joining NHC\, David worked as a senior policy adviser at the U.S. Department of the Treasury\, where he advised senior Treasury Department officials on matters related to housing and community development. His expertise includes credit availability; housing finance reform\, mortgage servicing\, affordable housing\, access to credit\, residential housing vacancy\, abandonment and demolition and community stabilization strategies. He also served as a member of the White House’s Detroit interagency team\, where his responsibilities included developing and implementing strategies to assist in the City of Detroit’s revitalization. He is a graduate of the University of Michigan and lives in Washington\, D.C. with his wife Hayley Hoffman.\n\n\n\n \nRobert Dietz\, Ph.D.\, is Chief Economist for NAHB\, where his responsibilities include housing market analysis\, forecasting and industry surveys\, and housing policy research. Prior to joining NAHB in 2005\, Robert worked as an economist for the Congressional Joint Committee on Taxation. He has testified before Congress on housing\, economic and tax issues. He is a leading expert on home construction analysis and trends and has been cited and appeared on CNBC\, the Wall Street Journal\, and other news media. Robert is a native of Dayton\, Ohio and earned a Ph.D. in Economics from the Ohio State University in 2003.\n\n\n\n \nMike Fratantoni is responsible for overseeing MBA’s industry surveys\, benchmarking studies\, economic and mortgage originations forecasts\, industry technology efforts\, and policy development research for both single-family and commercial/multifamily markets. Additionally\, Fratantoni is president and member of the Board of Directors of MISMO and serves on the CSP’s Industry Advisory Group and the membership committee of MERS. Prior to joining MBA\, Fratantoni worked in the industry in risk management and senior economist roles at Washington Mutual and Fannie Mae.  He received a Ph.D. in economics from Johns Hopkins University and a B.A. in economics from The College of William and Mary\, and has served as an adjunct professor at the University of Washington\, and Johns Hopkins\, George Washington\, and Georgetown Universities.\n\n\n\n \nLawrence Yun is chief economist and senior vice president of research at the National Association of REALTORS®. He oversees and is responsible for a wide range of research activity for the association including NAR’s Existing Home Sales statistics\, Affordability Index\, and Home Buyers and Sellers Profile Report. He regularly provides commentary on real estate market trends for its 1.3 million REALTORS®. Dr. Yun creates NAR’s forecasts and participates in many economic forecasting panels\, among them the Blue Chip Council and the Wall Street Journal Forecasting Survey. He also participates in the Industrial Economists Discussion Group at the Joint Center for Housing Studies of Harvard University. He appears regularly on financial news outlets\, is a frequent speaker at real estate conferences throughout the United States\, and has testified before Congress. Dr. Yun received his undergraduate degree from Purdue University and earned his Ph.D. from the University of Maryland at College Park.\n\n\n\n
